Iran reportedly began laying naval mines in the strait during Operation Epic Fury.
President Donald Trump stated that there would be severe consequences for Iran if they lay naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz.
President Trump stated on social media, “If Iran has put out any mines in the Hormuz Strait, and we have no reports of them doing so, we want them removed, IMMEDIATELY! If for any reason mines were placed, and they are not removed forthwith, the Military consequences to Iran will be at a level never seen before.”
The president continued, “If, on the other hand, they remove what may have been placed, it will be a giant step in the right direction! Additionally, we are using the same Technology and Missile capabilities deployed against Drug Traffickers to permanently eliminate any boat or ship attempting to mine the Hormuz Strait. They will be dealt with quickly and violently. BEWARE!”
President Trump later reported that the U.S. military had destroyed 10 Iranian mine-laying ships.
Vessels flying under the flags of Thailand, the Marshall Islands, and Japan are the most recent to have been attacked by projectiles near the Strait of Hormuz and off the coast of the United Arab Emirates this week. Shipping has virtually stopped through the strait as at least 13 vessels have been attacked by Iran or its proxies since the U.S.-Israeli strikes began on February 28.
